WHY BELGIUM

Belgium, with its rich tapestry of history, culture, and culinary delights, offers a captivating destination for travellers. Its stunning architecture, picturesque towns, and unique food experiences make it a standout choice for those seeking a blend of historical charm and modern vibrancy.

Among Belgium’s most compelling attractions are its charming towns. Bruges, with its medieval architecture and scenic canals, is often considered the crown jewel of the country. This fairy-tale town is bustling with tourists during the warmer months, but a visit in winter, especially around the quieter early months, reveals a serene beauty. Just a short train ride away is Ghent, known for its youthful energy and historical charm, while Antwerp, Belgium’s fashion capital, offers a lively atmosphere with trendy boutiques, a thriving coffee culture, and a dynamic vibe, making it particularly appealing to younger travellers. Antwerp’s vibrant culture provides a refreshing contrast to the more tourist-heavy Brussels. Read More

Belgium’s culinary scene is a major draw, with Belgian waffles being a prime highlight. These waffles are distinct from their American counterparts due to their unique batter, which creates a light, crispy texture and deep pockets perfect for holding toppings like fresh fruit, whipped cream, and chocolate. This waffle style is traditionally enjoyed throughout Belgium and is a testament to the country’s rich food culture.

Another Belgian specialty is frites, or fries, which hold a special place in the country’s culinary heritage. The term “French fries” is a bit of a misnomer. While many believe that fries originated in France, it is Belgium that claims the true origin. According to local lore, the Belgians were frying potatoes long before the French, and the term “French fries” likely emerged due to the American soldiers who encountered these delicious fries in Belgium during World War I. The soldiers associated the language spoken in Belgium’s southern region (French) with the fries, hence the name.

Belgium’s slower pace of life provides a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of neighbouring cities like Paris and Amsterdam. This relaxed environment allows visitors to unwind and truly enjoy the surroundings. In Brussels, the architecture, particularly in the historic Grote Markt, offers a glimpse into the country’s rich past with its intricate and captivating design.

Comic enthusiasts will find Brussels especially appealing, thanks to its murals featuring the iconic Belgian cartoon, Tintin. The country’s beer culture is another highlight, with Belgium offering a diverse range of brews that perfectly complement its cuisine.

Belgium’s history is marked by its unique cultural and political landscape. The country is divided into two main linguistic regions: Dutch-speaking Flanders in the north and French-speaking Wallonia in the south. Brussels, the capital, is a melting pot of these cultures and serves as the de facto capital of the European Union, underscoring its central role in European politics.

The Christmas markets in Belgium are among the most picturesque in Europe, set against the backdrop of quaint towns and festive cheer. Additionally, Ghent’s reputation as the “Vegetarian Capital of the World,” with its “Veggie Thursday” initiative encouraging plant-based eating, highlights the city’s commitment to dietary inclusivity.

Belgium’s compact size and excellent train network make it easy to explore. Cities like Ghent, Bruges, and Antwerp are all within an hour’s train ride from Brussels, and Belgium’s proximity to major European cities enhances its accessibility. With its blend of historic charm, culinary delights, and rich cultural experiences, Belgium is a destination that promises both relaxation and adventure.
