In 1967 the USA commissioned, architect and genius Buckminster Fuller to design a biosphere that would not only be a half dome but would be a three quarter dome.  The magnificent steel structure was covered with acrylic plates giving the appearance of a beautifully cut gemstone.

The skeleton of the dome was supposed to be bolted but due to cost constraints, (or so the Canadian’s claim), the struts were therefore welded into place making the dome immovable thus finding its new permanent home in Montreal.

Through the ages the sphere has had to withstand the perils of fire and ice storms but Buckminster’s phenomenal geodesic architectural piece still stands proud on the Canadian landscape .
