Set in the centre of Chichen Itza, the Kukulkan Pyramid is undoubtedly the most famous of all the pyramids in Latin America.  An amazing exhibition of Mayan architectural brilliance the pyramid is a representation of the Mayan calendar:- 91 steps on 4 sides make up 364 steps of the year with the last step being the top temple, the 9 stages each bisected by the stair case representing the 18 months of the Mayan calendar.

And if that is not fascinating enough, the pyramid is an ode to the snake god and during the summer and winter equinox the shadows reflect the descent of the snake down the stairs to join its people.  The pyramid is also known for its strange sounds and the echo from a clap at the bottom of the stairs is said to resemble the chirp of the feathered serpent deity.
