As children we have all felt the thrill of riding a go-cart, well for the Carreiros do Monte in Madeira this is part of daily life. Dating back to the 1890’s, the town of Monte set 800 metres above the capital city of Funchal, found a novel way to transport people down the steep and winding road to the city….by wicker baskets that are steered by two very fit Carreiros that wear special rubber soled shoes that act as brakes.
This mode of transportation has now become an exhilarating tourist attraction; whizz down the 5km hill road for the ride of your life.
