The Abu Simbel Temples stand as one of Egypt’s greatest wonders, carved over 3,500 years ago under Pharaoh Ramses II. Towering at 33 metres high and 38 metres wide, the Great Temple honours the gods while also glorifying Ramses himself. The smaller temple, dedicated to Queen Nefertari, reflects his devotion to his wife.

A marvel of both ancient and modern engineering, the temples were moved in 1968 to prevent them from being submerged by the rising waters of Lake Nasser.

This UNESCO-led effort relocated the entire site—piece by piece—to higher ground. Today, the Abu Simbel Temples continue to amaze visitors, especially during the sun festivals on February 22 and October 22, when the rising sun perfectly illuminates the temple’s inner sanctum.
