Set 75 metres on the rockface of the Hengshan Mountain this incredible monastery dates back 1500 years. The structure which clings to the cliffs like a swallow’s nest, is ingeniously held in place by a complex array of oak beams that are embedded in the rock.
With a total of 40 rooms connected by winding passages and bridges it is home to approximately 80 sculptures and is the only temple of its kind to embrace all three traditional Chinese religions, Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism.
