People talk about Chinese innovation, and nothing shows it better than the Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland, aka “the Deep Pit Hotel”. A gravity-defying architectural marvel, it plunges into the depths of the Earth. Carved into the side of a 90-metre-deep abandoned quarry in Songjiang, Shanghai, this luxury hotel doesn’t just break the mould; it digs right through it.

Eighteen stories descend below ground level, with two floors submerged underwater, making it the world’s lowest-altitude hotel. Built for the Intercontinental brand, it marked their 200th building globally.

The vision of Su Rongmau (Shimao Group’s Chairman) was brought to life by JADE+QA Architects. Construction began in 2006, and it took a little over a decade and around $300 million to complete. During this time, engineers earned 21 registered patents. They overcame immense challenges: preventing quarry flooding, enhancing stability against landslides, and installing seismic monitors.

The hotel features 336 rooms, all inspired by nature and named after precious stones, with water as a key aesthetic. Even the lobby’s mirrored wall mimics a cliff face, immersing guests in an “adventure to the centre of the Earth”. The theme continues outside, as guests can kayak across emerald waters, rock climb an 88-metre vertical wall, or zipline across the quarry abyss. At night, the quarry becomes the perfect amphitheatre for drone shows set against a dramatic artificial waterfall.

This amazing hotel is truly a “wonderland”, with a perfect blend of nature, technology, and luxury!
