Amsterdam is a city shaped by water. The rivers IJ and Amstel, together with the city’s iconic canals, have defined its character and steered its growth for centuries.

So, when it came time to mark Amsterdam’s 700th anniversary in 1975, the city chose to honour its past not with fireworks, but with sails. That year, SAIL Amsterdam was born, a maritime spectacle unlike any other, where majestic ships from across the world glide into the eastern harbour.

In 2025, half a century later, SAIL returns grander than ever. It marks the 50th anniversary of the festival, its tenth gathering of the fleet (following the 2020 cancellation), and the 750th anniversary of the city itself, a rare triple celebration.

More than 2.3 million visitors are expected in August, as over 800 vessels, from imposing tall ships to historic sailing craft and sleek modern ships, unfurl their masts against the Dutch sky. Yet the ships are only part of the magic. More than 200 events will bring the city to life, from parades and concerts to ship tours and dazzling evening light shows.

SAIL Amsterdam is more than a festival. It is a journey through time, a living tribute to the city’s enduring bond with the water, and a reminder that in Amsterdam, the waterways are not just scenery. They are the stage.
