Nestled between the vibrant neighbourhoods of Lapa and Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro lies one of Brazil’s most iconic landmarks: the Escadaria Selarón, or Selarón Steps. This stunning staircase embodies how one artist’s love for his adopted home can evolve into a lasting symbol of cultural pride and artistic expression.

The journey began in 1990 when Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón set out to renovate the dilapidated steps outside his home. What started as a simple project transformed into a lifelong passion as Selarón turned the 215-step staircase into a vibrant mosaic of over 2,000 tiles. The tiles showcase a kaleidoscope of hues, reflecting Brazil’s spirit and featuring everything from the bright colours of the Brazilian flag to fiery reds, Selarón’s favourite. Admirers from more than 60 countries also sourced and gifted the tiles. You’ll find tiles from as far afield as Morocco, China, and Portugal, creating a global mosaic. Each tile invites curiosity about its story and significance. This dazzling display celebrates not just Brazilian culture but also a rich tapestry of global influences.

To fund his ambitious endeavour, Selarón sold more than 25,000 paintings, pouring his creativity and determination into every tile he laid. Despite financial challenges, his dedication never wavered. He constantly created and evolved the steps by adding, fixing, and changing tiles. On 10 January 2013, Jorge Selarón fulfilled his tragic prophecy of completing his work only upon his death.

Today, the Escadaria Selarón stands as a testament to Selarón’s passion and a symbol of hope and creativity, inviting all who visit and experience the vibrant heart of Rio.
