Long before today’s dazzling crowds and breathtaking spectacles, the Moussem Moulay Abdellah Amghar began as a gathering to honour Moulay Abdellah Amghar, a revered Moroccan spiritual leader whose teachings brought communities together. For centuries, tribes from the Doukkala region have travelled to his sanctuary near El Jadida, gathering to pray, celebrate and preserve traditions passed down through generations.

Today, this centuries-old gathering has grown into one of Morocco’s most spectacular cultural celebrations. Every August, more than 5 million visitors experience the Moussem, as a temporary city of over 35,000 tents takes shape. Among the crowds, more than 2,200 riders and participants take part in dramatic Tbourida performances, representing over 123 sorbas, or equestrian groups.

The thunder of galloping horses fills the arena as riders charge forward in a breathtaking display of speed and precision. Rifles fire in unison, sending a sharp crack through the air as the crowd erupts. Beyond the Tbourida, falconry, Sufi chants, folk dances, colourful markets and traditional crafts bring Morocco’s heritage to life.

What began as a spiritual gathering has grown into a remarkable celebration of Moroccan culture, where faith, history and community come together. For a few unforgettable days each August, centuries-old traditions are not simply remembered; they continue to be lived.
