Every June, Lisbon bursts into life for the Festas de Lisboa, a month-long celebration in honour of Saint Anthony, the city’s beloved patron. Known as the matchmaker saint, Saint Anthony was said to bring couples together—and even help find lost things—making him a symbol of love and hope.
Rooted in 13th-century tradition, the festival blends Catholic heritage with lively street culture and neighbourhood pride. The biggest night is 12 June, when over 1,600 dancers parade down Avenida da Liberdade for the Marchas Populares, while locals grill more than 100,000 sardines and exchange basil plants (manjerico) with handwritten love notes.
Even romance takes centre stage with the Casamentos de Santo António, a city-sponsored mass wedding where 16 couples say “I do” in front of cheering crowds. With over a million people joining the party each year, Lisbon’s Popular Saints Festival is more than a celebration—it’s a living expression of community, culture, and joy.
