In Corfu, Greece, Easter isn’t just the most important religious celebration of the year — it’s also the most vibrant! Every Holy Saturday, as part of the island’s unique Easter celebrations, locals launch large clay pots from their balconies as the bells toll 11:00 in a spectacular tradition known as pot throwing (Botides).
The clay pots (some are rather large) are beautifully decorated with various inscriptions and family names. The crashing pots symbolise the rejection of misfortune and the welcoming of renewal—mirroring the Easter resurrection theme. It’s said the loud noise chases away evil spirits, while collecting the shards brings good luck for the year ahead.
It’s loud, it’s joyful, and it’s Corfu’s unique take on renewal—transforming Easter into an extraordinary celebration.
